Job Description
We are seeking a dedicated and meticulous Hospital Waste Operative with a focus on both clinical and recyclable waste streams. The successful candidate will play a crucial role in maintaining a safe, clean, and compliant hospital environment by ensuring the correct collection, segregation, and disposal of all types of waste. This role requires adherence to strict health and safety protocols and environmental guidelines, contributing directly to patient safety and the hospital’s sustainability efforts.
Key Responsibilities
- Collect, transport, and segregate clinical, offensive, domestic, and recyclable waste streams from various hospital departments.
- Ensure all waste is correctly identified, packaged, and stored according to national regulations (e.g., HTM 07-01).
- Operate waste compactors, balers, and other waste handling equipment safely and efficiently.
- Maintain accurate records of waste movements and disposal, including completing all necessary paperwork.
- Conduct daily checks on waste storage areas, ensuring cleanliness and compliance with health and safety standards.
- Report any issues with waste equipment, spills, or non-compliance to the immediate supervisor.
- Assist in the loading and unloading of waste containers for external collection.
- Promote best practices in waste management among hospital staff through informal guidance.
Required Skills
- Proven ability to follow detailed instructions and adhere to strict safety procedures.
- Good physical fitness and ability to perform manual handling tasks.
- Basic literacy and numeracy skills for record-keeping.
- Strong understanding of health and safety regulations relevant to waste management.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a busy hospital environment.
- Excellent time management and organizational skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience in waste management, particularly within a healthcare or similar regulated environment.
- Knowledge of HTM 07-01 (Health Technical Memorandum 07-01: Safe Management of Healthcare Waste).
- Full UK Driving Licence (preferred for operating internal transport vehicles if applicable).
- Environmental awareness and a commitment to sustainable practices.
