Job Description
We are seeking a diligent and motivated Marine Patrol Assistant to join our Public Safety team. This crucial role involves assisting in the patrol and enforcement of maritime regulations within Port of Oakland jurisdiction. You will operate and maintain patrol watercraft, respond to incidents, and provide essential support to Marine Patrol Officers. This is an excellent opportunity for individuals passionate about public safety, marine operations, and community service. Comprehensive training will be provided, including watercraft operation and safety protocols. This on-site role is essential for maintaining the safety and security of our port’s waterways.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist Marine Patrol Officers in routine patrols of port waterways and adjacent areas.
- Operate and maintain assigned patrol watercraft, ensuring readiness and adherence to safety standards.
- Conduct visual inspections for potential hazards, suspicious activities, and environmental concerns.
- Provide public assistance and information to mariners and port visitors.
- Respond to incidents and emergencies, including vessel accidents, spills, and medical aid calls.
- Assist in the enforcement of maritime laws, port regulations, and environmental protection guidelines.
- Prepare accurate reports and maintain detailed logs of patrol activities and incidents.
- Participate in ongoing training and professional development related to marine public safety.
- Collaborate effectively with local, state, and federal agencies on joint operations and initiatives.
Required Skills
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Valid state driver's license.
- Ability to obtain and maintain relevant marine safety certifications (e.g., Boating Safety Card).
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work effectively in a team environment.
- Basic computer proficiency for report writing and data entry.
- Physical ability to operate watercraft, perform duties in various weather conditions, and lift up to 50 lbs.
Preferred Qualifications
- Associate's degree in Criminal Justice, Maritime Studies, or related field.
- Previous experience operating small vessels or personal watercraft.
- Familiarity with maritime laws and regulations.
- First Aid/CPR certification.
- Prior experience in a public safety or security role.
