Job Description
We are seeking a highly skilled and dedicated IV Certified Pharmacy Technician with specialized expertise in sterile compounding to join our dynamic pharmacy team at HCA Florida Bayonet Point Hospital. This is a crucial role responsible for the accurate and aseptic preparation of sterile medications, including intravenous (IV) admixtures, chemotherapy, and other compounded sterile preparations (CSPs), ensuring patient safety and compliance with all USP and guidelines. The ideal candidate will possess exceptional attention to detail, a strong commitment to quality, and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced hospital environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Aseptically prepare sterile compounded preparations (CSPs), including IV admixtures, chemotherapy, and total parenteral nutrition (TPN), in accordance with USP <797> and <800> standards.
- Accurately measure, mix, and label medications using appropriate sterile techniques and equipment, such as laminar flow hoods and isolators.
- Maintain and clean sterile compounding areas, including primary engineering controls (PECs) and secondary engineering controls (SECs), following established protocols.
- Perform quality control checks on compounded medications and equipment to ensure accuracy, sterility, and integrity.
- Manage and maintain inventory of sterile compounding supplies and medications, performing ordering, receiving, and proper storage.
- Document all compounding activities, quality checks, and inventory movements accurately and completely.
- Adhere to all hospital policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements related to pharmacy operations and sterile compounding.
- Collaborate effectively with pharmacists, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to optimize patient care.
- Assist in training new pharmacy technicians on sterile compounding procedures and protocols.
Required Skills
- Current certification as a Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) by the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB).
- Active IV certification and demonstrable expertise in sterile compounding techniques.
- Minimum of 3 years of recent experience in a hospital or equivalent setting, with significant sterile compounding responsibilities.
- Thorough understanding and practical application of USP <797> and <800> guidelines.
- Exceptional attention to detail, accuracy, and strong organizational skills.
- Proficiency in pharmaceutical calculations and medication measurement.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Proficiency with pharmacy software systems.
Preferred Qualifications
- Associate's or Bachelor's degree in a related field.
- Advanced certifications in sterile compounding or hazardous medication handling.
- Experience with automated dispensing systems (e.g., Pyxis, Omnicell).
- Previous experience in a large acute care hospital setting.
