Job Description
We are seeking a compassionate and dedicated Hospice Porter to join our vital support team at Marie Curie Hospice in Newcastle upon Tyne. In this crucial role, you will be responsible for a wide range of duties that ensure the smooth and efficient running of our hospice, directly contributing to the comfort and well-being of our patients and their families. This role requires a sensitive and empathetic individual who can work discreetly and respectfully within a palliative care setting, often interacting with patients and their loved ones during challenging times. You will be an integral part of our team, upholding the highest standards of care and support.
Key Responsibilities
- Transport patients safely and comfortably between rooms, treatment areas, and reception, using wheelchairs or beds as required.
- Assist with the movement of equipment, furniture, and supplies throughout the hospice.
- Deliver and collect patient samples, prescriptions, and medical records to various departments.
- Maintain cleanliness and organization of designated areas, ensuring a safe and hygienic environment.
- Support the catering team by distributing meals and refreshments to patients and clearing away afterwards.
- Undertake general errands and duties as requested by nursing and administrative staff.
- Provide compassionate and respectful interaction with patients, visitors, and staff.
- Assist with waste management, including clinical and general waste disposal.
- Ensure all transport and moving equipment is clean and well-maintained.
Required Skills
- A compassionate and empathetic nature, with excellent interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work effectively and sensitively in a palliative care environment.
- Good physical stamina and the ability to perform tasks requiring lifting, pushing, and prolonged standing/walking.
- Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
- Reliable, punctual, and able to work independently as well as part of a team.
- Basic understanding of health and safety procedures.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and adhere to data protection policies.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience in a healthcare or hospice setting.
- Experience in a porter or support services role.
- Basic first aid certification.
- Knowledge of manual handling techniques and patient transport protocols.
