Job Description
We are seeking an enthusiastic and knowledgeable Garden Center Hand to join our team in Burnaby. This role is perfect for someone with a genuine passion for plants, excellent customer service skills, and a desire to work in a dynamic retail environment. You will be instrumental in maintaining the health and beauty of our plant stock, assisting customers with plant selection and care, and contributing to the overall success of our garden center.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide exceptional customer service, offering expert advice on plant selection, care, and pest/disease management.
- Perform daily plant maintenance tasks, including watering, pruning, fertilizing, and repotting.
- Monitor plant health, identify issues, and implement appropriate treatments.
- Assist with merchandising and display of plants and related products, ensuring an attractive and organized retail space.
- Help with receiving, unloading, and stocking new plant shipments.
- Maintain a clean and safe work environment, including sweeping, tidying, and organizing sales areas.
- Operate point-of-sale (POS) system for transactions when necessary.
- Educate customers on proper planting techniques, soil amendments, and seasonal care.
- Contribute to a positive team atmosphere and assist colleagues as needed.
Required Skills
- Strong knowledge of common garden plants, including annuals, perennials, shrubs, and trees.
- Demonstrated ability to provide outstanding customer service and build rapport.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Physical stamina to lift heavy items (up to 50 lbs), stand for extended periods, and perform repetitive tasks.
- Comfortable working outdoors in various weather conditions.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience working in a garden center, nursery, or similar horticultural retail environment.
- Horticultural education or certification.
- Experience with point-of-sale (POS) systems.
- Familiarity with local plant varieties and growing conditions in British Columbia.
