Job Description
We are seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Fossil Recovery Specialist with a strong background in heavy equipment operation to join our dynamic team in Scottsdale, Arizona. This unique role is crucial for our large-scale construction and infrastructure projects where paleontological resources may be encountered. The successful candidate will be responsible for the identification, documentation, recovery, and preservation of fossils, while also expertly operating various heavy machinery necessary for excavation and site preparation. You will work closely with project managers, environmental consultants, and archaeological teams to ensure compliance with all regulatory requirements and the ethical handling of paleontological finds.
Key Responsibilities
- Operate heavy equipment, including excavators, bulldozers, and front-end loaders, safely and proficiently for excavation and overburden removal.
- Identify and assess potential paleontological resources during pre-construction surveys and active excavation phases.
- Lead and participate in the careful excavation and recovery of fossil specimens, utilizing both heavy equipment and hand tools.
- Document fossil finds accurately, including detailed field notes, photographs, and GPS coordinates.
- Prepare and stabilize recovered fossils for transportation and curation, ensuring their integrity.
- Collaborate with project teams, environmental specialists, and regulatory agencies to ensure compliance with paleontological mitigation plans.
- Conduct site monitoring during ground-disturbing activities to prevent damage to paleontological resources.
- Maintain heavy equipment, perform routine checks, and report any malfunctions.
- Provide training and guidance to other field personnel on fossil recognition and basic recovery procedures.
- Contribute to project reporting and post-field assessment of paleontological resources.
Required Skills
- Minimum of 3 years of verifiable experience operating heavy construction equipment (e.g., excavators, bulldozers, backhoes).
- Demonstrated knowledge of basic geological principles and paleontological field recovery techniques.
- Ability to identify common fossil types relevant to the Southwest United States.
- Proficiency in field documentation, including mapping, photography, and detailed note-taking.
- Strong problem-solving skills and ability to adapt to varying field conditions.
- Excellent communication and teamwork abilities.
- Valid driver's license and clean driving record.
- Physical ability to perform demanding fieldwork, including lifting up to 50 lbs, standing, walking, and working in various weather conditions.
- OSHA 10 or 30 certification.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Paleontology, Geology, Archaeology, or a related field.
- Experience with GPS and GIS software for mapping and data collection.
- CPR and First Aid certification.
- Previous experience working on large-scale construction or infrastructure projects.
- Knowledge of federal and state regulations pertaining to paleontological resources.
