Job Description
The Cincinnati Museum Center seeks a highly motivated and skilled Florida Fossil Investigator with a specialized focus on Plio-Pleistocene faunas. This unique role will involve leading field expeditions, conducting detailed laboratory analysis, and contributing to significant research on the fossil record of Florida during the Pliocene and Pleistocene epochs. The successful candidate will be instrumental in expanding our understanding of ancient ecosystems, climate change impacts, and evolutionary patterns in the southeastern United States. This position requires a strong background in vertebrate paleontology, stratigraphy, and taphonomy, with a proven ability to manage projects from initial discovery to scientific publication.
Key Responsibilities
- Plan and execute paleontological fieldwork in Florida, including site identification, excavation, and specimen recovery, with a focus on Plio-Pleistocene deposits.
- Process, prepare, and identify fossil specimens in the laboratory, ensuring proper documentation and curation according to museum standards.
- Conduct detailed taphonomic and biostratigraphic analysis of fossil assemblages.
- Manage and maintain comprehensive databases of fossil localities and specimens.
- Contribute to scientific publications, reports, and presentations based on research findings.
- Collaborate with internal curatorial staff, external researchers, and educational outreach teams.
- Mentor junior staff, interns, and volunteers in paleontological techniques.
- Adhere to all safety protocols and ethical guidelines for fieldwork and collection management.
Required Skills
- Doctorate or Master's degree in Paleontology, Geology, or a related field with a strong focus on vertebrate paleontology.
- Minimum of 3 years of professional experience in paleontological fieldwork and laboratory analysis.
- Demonstrated expertise in Plio-Pleistocene vertebrate paleontology, specifically Florida faunas.
- Proficiency in fossil excavation, preparation, identification, and curation techniques.
- Strong understanding of stratigraphy, sedimentology, and taphonomy.
- Experience with GIS software for mapping fossil localities and geological contexts.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills for scientific reporting and public engagement.
Preferred Qualifications
- Proven track record of scientific publications in peer-reviewed journals.
- Experience managing paleontological collections.
- Familiarity with permitting processes for fieldwork on public and private lands in Florida.
- Ability to operate heavy equipment for excavation (e.g., backhoe) or lead teams utilizing such equipment.
- Experience in grant writing and fundraising for paleontological research.
