Job Description

This pivotal role is central to our ongoing investigations into Florida’s Plio-Pleistocene fossil record. The Florida Fossil Investigator will conduct fieldwork across various sites in Florida, meticulously excavating, documenting, and collecting vertebrate and invertebrate fossils from this critical geological period. This position requires a deep understanding of Cenozoic stratigraphy and taphonomy, combined with practical skills in fossil preparation, conservation, and data management within a laboratory setting. The investigator will contribute significantly to scientific publications and educational outreach efforts, advancing our understanding of Florida’s ancient ecosystems and climate history. This is an on-site position based primarily out of our research facilities with frequent travel for fieldwork.

Key Responsibilities

  • Plan and execute paleontological fieldwork, including site reconnaissance, excavation, and geological mapping, primarily focusing on Plio-Pleistocene deposits in Florida.
  • Document fossil localities thoroughly, including stratigraphic measurements, photographic records, and GPS coordinates.
  • Carefully excavate, collect, and transport fossil specimens to the laboratory for preparation and curation.
  • Perform initial fossil preparation, cleaning, stabilization, and conservation using appropriate techniques.
  • Maintain detailed databases of fossil collections, including taxonomic identification, specimen data, and locality information.
  • Contribute to the identification and preliminary analysis of vertebrate and invertebrate fossils.
  • Assist with the development of research proposals and grant applications related to Plio-Pleistocene paleontology.
  • Collaborate with university faculty, students, and external partners on research projects.
  • Participate in educational outreach activities, presenting findings to scientific and public audiences.

Required Skills

  • Demonstrated experience in paleontological fieldwork, including excavation and geological mapping.
  • Proficiency in fossil preparation, conservation, and curation techniques.
  • Strong knowledge of Cenozoic stratigraphy, particularly the Plio-Pleistocene epoch.
  • Ability to identify common vertebrate and invertebrate fossils from the Florida Plio-Pleistocene.
  • Experience with GPS and GIS software for site documentation.
  • Excellent data management and record-keeping skills.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team in challenging field conditions.
  • Valid driver's license and ability to operate 4×4 vehicles.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Paleontology, Geology, Evolutionary Biology, or a related field.
  • Experience with advanced imaging techniques (e.g., CT scanning) for fossil analysis.
  • Track record of contributing to scientific publications or presentations.
  • Experience mentoring junior researchers or students.
  • Proficiency in scientific illustration or photography of fossils.
