Job Description
We are seeking a highly motivated and skilled Florida Fossil Investigator with a specialized focus on Plio-Pleistocene faunas to join our dynamic paleontology team. This pivotal role involves leading and participating in fossil discovery, excavation, preparation, and data management throughout Florida, with particular emphasis on sites within the Plio-Pleistocene geological epoch. The successful candidate will be instrumental in expanding our understanding of ancient Florida ecosystems, contributing to ongoing research projects, and ensuring the meticulous documentation and preservation of valuable paleontological resources. This is an exciting opportunity for a dedicated paleontologist to make significant contributions to the field and to the public understanding of Florida’s deep past.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and participate in paleontological fieldwork, including prospecting, excavation, and recovery of Plio-Pleistocene vertebrate and invertebrate fossils across Florida.
- Conduct detailed stratigraphic and taphonomic analyses in the field and laboratory.
- Prepare, identify, and catalog fossil specimens in accordance with museum standards.
- Maintain accurate field notes, photographic records, and digital databases of all discoveries.
- Collaborate with senior researchers, staff, and volunteers on ongoing projects.
- Assist in the development and preparation of scientific reports, publications, and presentations.
- Ensure strict adherence to all safety protocols and ethical guidelines during fieldwork and laboratory activities.
- Operate and maintain specialized field equipment, including GPS and excavation tools.
- Contribute to public outreach and educational initiatives related to Florida's fossil record.
Required Skills
- Proven experience in paleontological fieldwork and excavation techniques, specifically with Plio-Pleistocene deposits.
- Strong knowledge of Plio-Pleistocene vertebrate and/or invertebrate paleontology of North America, particularly Florida.
- Proficiency in fossil identification, preparation, and curation.
- Experience with GPS, GIS, and digital data management for field records.
- Excellent observational skills, attention to detail, and problem-solving abilities.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team in challenging field conditions.
- Valid driver's license and ability to travel frequently within Florida.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree in Paleontology, Geology, Earth Sciences, or a related field.
- Experience with permit acquisition and compliance for paleontological resource management.
- Demonstrated ability to contribute to scientific publications or technical reports.
- Experience mentoring junior staff or volunteers.
- First Aid/CPR certification.
