Job Description
We are seeking a highly motivated and enthusiastic Avian & Exotic Animal Vet Intern to join our dedicated team in Plymouth. This internship offers an unparalleled opportunity to gain hands-on experience with a diverse range of avian and exotic species under the guidance of experienced veterinarians. The successful candidate will be involved in all aspects of patient care, from initial consultation and diagnosis to treatment and post-operative management, within a supportive and educational environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist veterinarians with physical examinations, diagnostics, and treatments for avian and exotic patients.
- Learn and perform basic veterinary procedures under direct supervision, including venipuncture, catheter placement, and medication administration.
- Monitor anesthetized patients and assist in surgical procedures.
- Contribute to the daily care and husbandry of hospitalized avian and exotic animals.
- Maintain accurate and detailed patient records.
- Participate in daily rounds, case discussions, and continuing education sessions.
- Communicate effectively with clients regarding patient status and care instructions.
- Assist with laboratory sample collection and preparation.
- Ensure a clean, organized, and safe clinical environment.
Required Skills
- DVM or equivalent veterinary degree (or nearing completion)
- Strong passion for avian and exotic animal medicine
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment
- High level of empathy and compassion for animals and their owners
- Demonstrated ability to work as part of a team
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience (volunteer or paid) in a veterinary setting, especially with exotic animals
- Membership in professional veterinary organizations
- Proficiency in veterinary software systems
