Job Description

Join Gallaudet University as a Deaf Culture & Advocacy Intern and immerse yourself in the vibrant world of Deaf culture and human rights advocacy. This internship offers a unique opportunity to contribute to initiatives that promote awareness, understanding, and equity for the Deaf community. You will work closely with our advocacy teams, participating in research, community outreach, and the development of educational materials. This is an on-site position designed for individuals passionate about making a tangible difference.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist in researching current legislative and policy issues affecting the Deaf community.
  • Support the development and dissemination of advocacy materials, including reports, presentations, and social media content.
  • Participate in community outreach events and educational workshops.
  • Help organize and coordinate advocacy-related meetings and events.
  • Contribute to special projects focused on promoting Deaf culture and ASL.
  • Liaise with various departments and external partners to gather information and facilitate collaboration.
  • Provide administrative support to the advocacy team as needed.

Required Skills

  • Proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL) is essential.
  • Strong research and analytical skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated interest in Deaf culture, human rights, and advocacy.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Proficiency with standard office software (e.g., Microsoft Office Suite).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Currently pursuing a degree in Deaf Studies, Sociology, Political Science, Communications, or a related field.
  • Prior experience in advocacy, non-profit work, or community engagement.
  • Familiarity with legislative processes and policy analysis.
