Job Description
We are seeking an inspiring and dynamic Charter School Music Lead to join our team in Getty Square, Yonkers. This pivotal role involves developing and implementing a comprehensive music curriculum that engages students from diverse backgrounds, fostering a love for music, and cultivating their artistic talents. The Music Lead will be responsible for overseeing all aspects of the school’s music program, from classroom instruction to extracurricular activities and performances. You will collaborate with other arts leads, classroom teachers, and school leadership to create an integrated and enriching educational environment. The ideal candidate is a passionate educator with a strong musical background, exceptional leadership skills, and a commitment to nurturing student growth in a vibrant charter school setting.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, implement, and continuously refine a comprehensive K-8 music curriculum aligned with school vision and educational standards.
- Deliver engaging and effective music instruction to students across various grade levels, incorporating diverse musical styles and instruments.
- Lead and manage all aspects of the school's music program, including budgeting, resource allocation, and scheduling.
- Organize and direct student performances, concerts, and recitals throughout the academic year.
- Mentor and collaborate with other teachers and staff to integrate music into interdisciplinary projects and school-wide events.
- Assess student progress and provide constructive feedback to foster musical development and achievement.
- Maintain and manage music equipment, instruments, and performance spaces.
- Communicate effectively with parents, guardians, and the wider school community regarding music program activities and student successes.
- Stay current with best practices in music education and curriculum development.
- Contribute positively to the school's culture and participate in school-wide professional development.
Required Skills
- Bachelor's degree in Music Education, Music Performance, or a related field.
- Minimum of 3 years of demonstrable experience teaching music at the K-8 level, preferably in a charter or urban school setting.
- Proficiency in teaching a variety of musical instruments (e.g., piano, guitar, percussion, wind instruments) and vocal techniques.
- Strong classroom management skills and ability to create an inclusive and dynamic learning environment.
- Proven ability to design and implement effective music curricula.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
- Passion for music education and a commitment to student success.
- Ability to inspire and motivate young musicians.
- Experience leading student performances and events.
- Valid New York State teaching certification (or eligibility).
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree in Music Education or a related field.
- Experience leading a school-wide music program or department.
- Proficiency in music technology and composition software.
- Bilingual abilities (e.g., Spanish, as relevant to the community).
- Experience with culturally responsive pedagogy and differentiated instruction.
