Job Description

We are seeking a passionate and dedicated Ancient Life Specialist with a strong focus on education and curation to join our dynamic team. This role is pivotal in bringing the prehistoric world to life for diverse audiences, from schoolchildren to academic researchers. The specialist will be responsible for the interpretation, exhibition, and educational programming related to our extensive collections of fossils, paleontological specimens, and other ancient life artifacts. This position requires a blend of scientific expertise, excellent communication skills, and a commitment to public engagement and ethical curation practices.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and deliver engaging educational programs, workshops, and tours for various age groups and educational levels, focusing on ancient life, paleontology, and earth history.
  • Assist in the curation, documentation, and preservation of paleontological collections, including accessioning, cataloging, and monitoring environmental conditions.
  • Contribute to the research, development, and installation of museum exhibits related to ancient life, ensuring scientific accuracy and public accessibility.
  • Collaborate with internal teams and external partners on interdisciplinary projects and outreach initiatives.
  • Provide expert knowledge and interpretative content for public inquiries, media requests, and educational materials.
  • Conduct basic research on collection materials to enhance understanding and inform interpretative content.
  • Participate in fieldwork related to fossil discovery and collection, as opportunities arise.

Required Skills

  • Demonstrated expertise in paleontology, geology, evolutionary biology, or a related field focusing on ancient life.
  • Proven experience in developing and delivering educational content for diverse audiences.
  • Strong understanding of museum curation principles and collections management best practices.
  • Excellent verbal and and written communication skills for both scientific and general audiences.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment and independently on assigned tasks.
  • Proficiency in research and data interpretation.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's or Ph.D. degree in Paleontology, Geology, Museum Studies, or a closely related field.
  • Experience with digital collection management systems and databases.
  • Prior experience working in a museum, botanical garden, or similar educational institution.
  • Grant writing experience or participation in securing funding for educational or research projects.
  • Proficiency in a second language, particularly Spanish, due to the region's cultural context.
