Job Description
We are seeking a highly skilled and meticulous Podcast Transcriber to join our remote team. This is a contract position focused on accurately transcribing audio content from various NPR podcasts and news segments into written text. The ideal candidate will have exceptional listening skills, a keen eye for detail, and a strong understanding of grammar and punctuation. You will play a crucial role in making our content accessible and searchable, supporting our commitment to public information. This role requires working independently to meet deadlines and maintain the high standards of accuracy that NPR is known for.
Key Responsibilities
- Transcribe audio recordings of podcasts and news programs into clear, accurate, and grammatically correct text.
- Ensure precise identification of speakers and correct spelling of names, places, and technical terms.
- Format transcripts according to NPR's style guidelines and established templates.
- Proofread and edit your own work to ensure 99%+ accuracy.
- Manage time effectively to meet strict deadlines for various transcription projects.
- Utilize transcription software and tools efficiently.
- Communicate any issues or ambiguities in audio quality or content promptly to the project lead.
Required Skills
- Excellent listening comprehension and ability to discern nuances in spoken language.
- Superior grammar, punctuation, and spelling skills in US English.
- Proficiency in transcription software (e.g., Express Scribe, oTranscribe, or similar).
- High typing speed (minimum 60 WPM) with accuracy.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to maintain focus over extended periods.
- Reliable internet connection and suitable home office setup for remote work.
- Ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks effectively.
Preferred Qualifications
- Prior experience transcribing for media, news, or podcast production.
- Familiarity with NPR's programming and journalistic style.
- Experience with different accents and diverse speech patterns.
- Basic understanding of journalistic ethics and content sensitivity.
- Ability to transcribe content covering a wide range of topics, from politics and science to culture and arts.
