Job Description

Hoag Hospital is seeking a compassionate and dedicated Parish Nurse to join our Community & Church Outreach team on a part-time basis. This vital role will involve integrating faith and health within local church communities in Costa Mesa, providing health education, advocacy, and holistic support. The Parish Nurse acts as a health resource, counselor, and educator, promoting wellness and bridging individuals to necessary healthcare and community services, all while respecting the unique spiritual context of each congregation. This position is perfect for an RN with a heart for service and a desire to make a tangible impact on community health and well-being.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide health education on various topics (e.g., chronic disease management, preventive care, mental health) through workshops, presentations, and one-on-one counseling within church settings and community events.
  • Offer individual health counseling, assessment, and spiritual support to congregants, families, and community members, adhering to professional nursing standards and ethical guidelines.
  • Act as a health advocate, assisting individuals in navigating the healthcare system and connecting them with appropriate Hoag services and external community resources.
  • Organize and facilitate health screenings, wellness programs, and support groups tailored to the needs of the church and wider community.
  • Collaborate closely with church leadership, pastoral staff, and existing community organizations to identify health needs and develop relevant programs.
  • Participate in home visits to congregants as needed, providing health assessments, education, and support in a familiar environment.
  • Maintain accurate and confidential records of health interactions, activities, and program outcomes in accordance with Hoag Hospital policies and regulatory requirements.
  • Serve as a visible health presence within the community, fostering trust and promoting healthy lifestyles consistent with Hoag’s mission.

Required Skills

  • Current, unrestricted Registered Nurse (RN) license in the State of California.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • Minimum of 3 years of clinical nursing experience, preferably in community health, public health, or medical-surgical settings.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and compassionately with diverse populations, including individuals from various cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to work independently, managing multiple priorities in varied settings.
  • Proficiency in health assessment, patient education, and advocacy.
  • A deep understanding of and respect for faith-based communities and their role in health and wellness.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree.
  • Certification in Faith Community Nursing (Parish Nursing).
  • Experience in program development and implementation within a community or non-profit setting.
  • Familiarity with local community health resources and social services in Costa Mesa and Orange County.
  • Bilingual proficiency (English/Spanish) is highly desirable to serve our diverse community.
