Job Description

Are you passionate about public safety and looking to start a rewarding career? The City of Nanaimo is seeking an enthusiastic and motivated individual for a Trainee Fire Inspector position. This entry-level role is designed to provide comprehensive training and mentorship, preparing you for a vital career in fire prevention and public education. You will work closely with experienced Fire Inspectors, learning the intricacies of fire codes, safety regulations, and community outreach. Key Responsibilities

  • Assist senior Fire Inspectors with routine inspections of residential, commercial, and industrial properties.
  • Learn and apply the British Columbia Fire Code and other relevant safety standards.
  • Participate in fire safety plan reviews and permit processing under supervision.
  • Conduct basic fire investigations and hazard assessments.
  • Assist in delivering fire safety education programs and presentations to the community.
  • Maintain accurate records and documentation of inspections and activities.
  • Collaborate with other city departments and emergency services personnel.
  • Continuously engage in professional development and training as required.

Required Skills

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Valid Class 5 British Columbia Driver's License with a clean driving record.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Ability to learn and apply complex technical information.
  • Proficiency in basic computer applications (Microsoft Office Suite).
  • Demonstrated commitment to public safety and community service.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Post-secondary education in Fire Science, Building Technology, or a related field.
  • Basic knowledge of building codes or fire safety regulations.
  • Experience in a public service or customer-facing role.
  • First Aid and CPR certification.
