Job Description

We are seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Ballistics Expert to join our Forensic Science and Identification Services division. This pivotal role involves the scientific examination of firearms, ammunition, and other ballistic evidence to support criminal investigations. The successful candidate will conduct comprehensive analyses, prepare detailed reports, and provide expert testimony in court. Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct detailed forensic examinations of firearms, ammunition, spent projectiles, and cartridge cases.
  • Perform microscopic comparisons using specialized equipment to identify unique characteristics.
  • Determine firearm operability, make, model, and potential modifications.
  • Analyze trajectories and reconstruction of shooting incidents.
  • Prepare clear, concise, and scientifically sound forensic reports.
  • Provide expert testimony in court regarding ballistic evidence findings.
  • Maintain chain of custody for all evidence and adhere to strict laboratory protocols.
  • Participate in professional development and research to stay current with advancements in forensic ballistics.
  • Collaborate with other forensic specialists, investigators, and legal professionals.

Required Skills

  • Bachelor's degree in Forensic Science, Criminal Justice, Physics, Engineering, or a related scientific field.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in forensic ballistics or firearms examination.
  • Proficiency in the use of comparison microscopes and other ballistics examination tools.
  • In-depth knowledge of firearm mechanics, ammunition types, and ballistic principles.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills for report writing and court testimony.
  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality and ethical standards.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree or Ph.D. in a relevant scientific discipline.
  • Certification by a recognized forensic science board (e.g., ABMFE, AFTE).
  • Experience with advanced ballistic imaging systems (e.g., IBIS).
  • Previous experience working in a police forensic laboratory or government agency.
  • Knowledge of Canadian legal procedures related to forensic evidence.
