Job Description

We are seeking a diligent and meticulous Medical Gas Porter with a strong focus on technical compliance to join our Estates and Facilities team. This critical role involves the safe and efficient management, movement, and storage of medical gas cylinders throughout the hospital premises. You will be responsible for ensuring that all medical gas systems and cylinder handling procedures adhere strictly to health and safety regulations, national guidelines, and trust policies. The successful candidate will play a vital role in maintaining the continuous and safe supply of essential medical gases, directly supporting patient care and operational efficiency. This position requires physical fitness, exceptional attention to detail, and a proactive approach to safety and compliance.

Key Responsibilities

  • Safely transport medical gas cylinders to and from wards, departments, and storage areas.
  • Manage the rotation and inventory of medical gas cylinders, ensuring adequate stock levels and expiration date monitoring.
  • Conduct daily checks on medical gas manifolds, pipelines, and alarm systems, reporting any anomalies promptly.
  • Ensure all medical gas cylinders are stored correctly, securely, and in designated areas, adhering to COSHH and other relevant safety regulations.
  • Perform routine visual inspections of gas cylinders and associated equipment for damage or defects.
  • Maintain accurate records of cylinder movements, usage, and maintenance activities.
  • Assist in the coordination of medical gas deliveries and collections with external suppliers.
  • Participate in emergency response procedures related to medical gas systems, as required.
  • Liaise with clinical staff and engineering teams regarding medical gas requirements and issues.
  • Contribute to the development and review of medical gas handling procedures and risk assessments.
  • Adhere strictly to all Trust policies, national guidelines, and health and safety legislation pertinent to medical gas management.

Required Skills

  • Proven experience in a portering or logistics role, ideally within a healthcare setting.
  • Demonstrable understanding of health and safety principles, particularly concerning cylinder handling and storage.
  • Excellent physical fitness and ability to lift and move heavy objects safely.
  • Strong attention to detail and a methodical approach to tasks.
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills to interact effectively with staff at all levels.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Basic IT literacy for record-keeping and communication.

Preferred Qualifications

  • NVQ Level 2 in Health and Social Care or equivalent.
  • Manual handling training certification.
  • Knowledge of medical gas systems and associated equipment.
  • Previous experience with medical gas inventory management systems.
  • Certification in COSHH (Control of Substances Hazardous to Health) regulations.
