Job Description

We are seeking a highly motivated and skilled GIS Mapping Specialist with a specialized focus on paleontology to join our dynamic team. This is a 100% remote position, offering the flexibility to work from anywhere while contributing to impactful environmental and infrastructure projects. The successful candidate will be responsible for creating, managing, and analyzing geospatial data related to paleontological resources, collaborating with interdisciplinary teams, and ensuring the accuracy and integrity of all GIS products. Key Responsibilities

  • Develop, manage, and maintain complex GIS datasets pertaining to paleontological sites, fossil localities, and geological formations.
  • Perform advanced spatial analysis to identify potential paleontological resource areas, assess impacts, and support mitigation strategies.
  • Create high-quality maps, figures, and other visual products for reports, presentations, and project deliverables.
  • Interpret and integrate diverse data sources including geological maps, aerial imagery, satellite data, survey data, and field notes into GIS.
  • Collaborate closely with paleontologists, geologists, environmental scientists, and project managers to understand project requirements and deliver tailored GIS solutions.
  • Ensure data accuracy, consistency, and compliance with project specifications and relevant regulatory standards.
  • Develop and implement GIS-based workflows and methodologies to streamline data processing and analysis.
  • Provide technical support and training on GIS software and best practices to team members as needed.

Required Skills

  • Proficiency with Esri ArcGIS software suite (ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Desktop, ArcGIS Online/Enterprise).
  • Strong understanding of geospatial data management principles, projections, and coordinate systems.
  • Demonstrated experience with remote sensing data analysis and imagery interpretation.
  • Familiarity with paleontological data types, terminology, and survey methodologies.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a remote, interdisciplinary team.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, for technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Strong problem-solving abilities and attention to detail.
  • Bachelor's degree in Geography, Geology, Environmental Science, GIS, or a related field.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in GIS, Geology, Paleontology, or a closely related field.
  • Experience with other GIS software platforms (e.g., QGIS, Google Earth Engine).
  • Proficiency in scripting languages such as Python for GIS automation (ArcPy).
  • Experience with relational databases and SQL for managing spatial data.
  • Knowledge of cultural resource management and environmental regulations (e.g., NEPA, NHPA, CESA) as they relate to paleontological resources.
  • Prior experience working on projects for federal, state, or local government agencies.
