Job Description
Join the Natural History Museum of Utah as a Fossil Park Program Leader for an exciting summer season! This temporary position is perfect for enthusiastic individuals passionate about outdoor education, paleontology, and inspiring young minds. You will be responsible for leading engaging and educational programs at our designated Fossil Park, focusing on geology, paleontology, and local ecosystems. This hands-on role involves direct interaction with children and families, facilitating discovery, and ensuring a safe and memorable experience in an outdoor setting.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and deliver engaging outdoor education programs centered around fossils, geology, and natural history.
- Supervise and mentor program participants, ensuring their safety and fostering a positive learning environment.
- Prepare and maintain educational materials and equipment for daily programs.
- Lead interpretive walks and activities within the Fossil Park, identifying geological features and fossil evidence.
- Educate participants on paleontological ethics, preservation, and scientific methods.
- Assist with program registration, participant check-in, and administrative tasks as needed.
- Communicate effectively with parents, guardians, and museum staff.
- Adapt program content and activities to suit various age groups and learning styles.
- Adhere to all safety protocols and emergency procedures.
Required Skills
- Proven experience in outdoor education, camp counseling, or youth leadership (1+ year).
- Strong knowledge of basic geology, paleontology, or natural history.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, especially with children and families.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team in an outdoor setting.
- Current First Aid and CPR certification or willingness to obtain prior to employment.
- Physical ability to walk, stand, and lead activities outdoors for extended periods in varying weather conditions.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree (or pursuing) in Education, Environmental Science, Geology, Biology, or a related field.
- Experience working with diverse age groups, particularly elementary and middle school students.
- Knowledge of local Utah geology and fossil sites.
- Proficiency in a second language (e.g., Spanish).
