Job Description

Join the National Park Service as a Paleo Aide and contribute to the vital work of preserving prehistoric resources. This seasonal position offers a unique opportunity to work outdoors, assist paleontologists, and engage with the public, all while living within the park environment. As a Paleo Aide, you will support scientific research and resource management efforts, focusing on the discovery, documentation, and preservation of paleontological sites and fossils. This is an on-site role that includes seasonal housing, providing an immersive experience in national park operations and conservation.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist paleontologists with field work, including survey, excavation, and fossil collection.
  • Document findings accurately using field notes, photography, and GPS.
  • Prepare, sort, and catalog fossil specimens in a laboratory setting.
  • Conduct basic maintenance of field equipment and laboratory tools.
  • Participate in educational outreach programs, interpreting paleontological resources for park visitors.
  • Adhere to all safety protocols and NPS regulations for resource management.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work environment in both field and lab.
  • Assist with data entry and basic report preparation.

Required Skills

  • Ability to perform strenuous outdoor work in varying weather conditions.
  • Strong attention to detail for documentation and specimen handling.
  • Basic knowledge of geology, paleontology, or related earth sciences.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for public interaction.
  • Proficiency with basic hand tools and field equipment.
  • Valid state driver's license.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience in field archaeology, paleontology, or conservation.
  • Experience with GPS units, digital photography, and data management software.
  • Enrollment in or completion of a degree program in geology, biology, anthropology, or related fields.
  • Wilderness First Aid or other relevant safety certifications.
  • Experience operating 4×4 vehicles.
