Job Description
We are seeking a highly skilled and compassionate Burn Unit Nurse to join our specialized hospital wing in Des Moines, IA. This critical role involves providing expert nursing care to patients with various types of burns, from admission through rehabilitation. The successful candidate will demonstrate strong clinical judgment, a deep understanding of wound care principles, pain management, and a commitment to patient advocacy in a high-acuity environment. This position offers crisis pay in recognition of the specialized expertise and demanding nature of burn care.
Key Responsibilities
- Assess, plan, implement, and evaluate comprehensive nursing care for burn patients, including adults and pediatrics.
- Manage complex wound care, including debridement, dressing changes, and application of specialized burn treatments.
- Administer medications safely and accurately, including pain management protocols specific to burn injuries.
- Monitor vital signs, fluid balance, and hemodynamic status, recognizing and responding to critical changes.
- Educate patients and their families on burn care, pain management, infection prevention, and rehabilitation strategies.
- Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team including physicians, physical therapists, occupational therapists, dietitians, and social workers.
- Maintain a sterile environment and adhere to strict infection control protocols.
- Document patient status, care provided, and responses to interventions accurately and thoroughly in electronic health records.
- Participate in emergency response and resuscitation efforts as needed.
- Provide emotional support and counseling to patients and families coping with traumatic burn injuries.
Required Skills
- Active Registered Nurse (RN) license in Iowa or compact state.
- Minimum of 3 years of acute care nursing experience, with at least 1 year in an ICU, ED, or burn unit setting.
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
- Current Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification.
- Proficiency in wound care management and sterile techniques.
- Strong critical thinking and assessment skills.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities.
- Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, high-stress environment.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN).
- Certification in Burn Nursing (CBRN) or similar specialty certification.
- Experience with electronic health record systems (e.g., Epic).
- Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC) or Emergency Nursing Pediatric Course (ENPC) certification.
