Job Description

We are seeking a dedicated and experienced Environmental Compliance Monitor with a specialization in paleontology to join our dynamic team in Orlando, Florida. This role is crucial for ensuring that infrastructure projects adhere to all environmental regulations and protect significant paleontological resources. The successful candidate will be responsible for conducting field monitoring, documenting findings, and collaborating with project teams and regulatory agencies to maintain compliance. This is an on-site position primarily focused on fieldwork within project areas in and around Orlando.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct daily on-site environmental monitoring during various phases of infrastructure construction projects.
  • Specialized monitoring for paleontological resources, including identifying, documenting, and protecting fossils as per project and regulatory requirements.
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local environmental permits, regulations, and mitigation plans.
  • Prepare detailed field reports, daily logs, and documentation of environmental and paleontological observations and compliance activities.
  • Communicate effectively with project managers, construction crews, clients, and regulatory agency representatives regarding compliance matters.
  • Implement and oversee environmental protection measures, including erosion and sediment control, stormwater management, and wildlife protection.
  • Participate in pre-construction meetings and provide guidance on environmental and paleontological compliance strategies.
  • Identify potential non-compliance issues and recommend corrective actions.
  • Assist in training project personnel on environmental awareness and compliance protocols.

Required Skills

  • Bachelor’s degree in Paleontology, Geology, Archaeology, Environmental Science, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in environmental monitoring, with a significant portion focused on paleontological resource management in an infrastructure or construction context.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of federal and Florida state environmental regulations and permitting processes (e.g., NEPA, Section 106, Florida SHPO requirements for paleo).
  • Proven ability to identify and document paleontological resources in the field.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills for report writing and stakeholder interaction.
  • Ability to work independently in a field environment, often exposed to varying weather conditions and construction hazards.
  • Proficiency with GPS, GIS, and other field data collection technologies.
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to travel to various project sites within the region.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Paleontology or a closely related discipline.
  • Certification as a Professional Geologist (PG) or relevant professional certifications.
  • Experience working with Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) or other state agency projects.
  • OSHA 10-hour or 30-hour construction safety certification.
  • Experience with environmental impact assessments and mitigation planning.
