Job Description

The San Francisco Opera is seeking an enthusiastic and dedicated Stagehand (Junior) to join our dynamic production team. This entry-level position is perfect for individuals passionate about live theater and events, eager to learn the foundational skills of stagecraft, and comfortable with a significant portion of night work. As a Junior Stagehand, you will play a crucial role in the preparation, setup, operation, and strike of various theatrical productions and special events at the iconic War Memorial Opera House and other venues. Key Responsibilities

  • Assist with the loading and unloading of theatrical equipment, sets, props, and costumes.
  • Support the setup, rigging, and striking of scenery, lighting, sound, and projection equipment.
  • Operate counterweight systems, follow spot operation, and other stage machinery under supervision.
  • Perform routine maintenance and repair on stage equipment and properties as directed.
  • Ensure the safety and cleanliness of the stage and backstage areas.
  • Participate in show calls, including scene changes, prop placement, and technical support during live performances.
  • Adhere to all safety protocols and company policies.
  • Work collaboratively with various departments, including lighting, sound, costumes, and props.

Required Skills

  • Ability to lift and move heavy objects (up to 50 lbs) repeatedly.
  • Basic understanding of hand tools and their safe operation.
  • Strong work ethic and eagerness to learn.
  • Reliability and punctuality, especially for night and weekend shifts.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team-oriented environment.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Comfortable working at heights and in varying environmental conditions (dust, noise, dark).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience in a theater, concert, or event production setting (even volunteer or academic).
  • Knowledge of basic theatrical terminology.
  • Familiarity with rigging principles or stage machinery.
  • First Aid/CPR certification.
