Job Description
Join Ocean Wise Conservation Association’s specialized Red Deer Research and Rehabilitation Centre as a Marine Mammal Training Intern. This unique internship offers an unparalleled opportunity to gain hands-on experience in the care, welfare, and training of marine mammals within a dedicated rehabilitation and research environment. You will work closely with experienced marine mammal specialists, contributing to daily operations, enrichment programs, and positive reinforcement training sessions designed to support animal welfare and prepare for potential reintroduction or long-term care. This role is crucial for individuals aspiring to a career in marine biology, animal behavior, or zoological sciences, providing foundational skills and an understanding of the complex needs of marine life.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist senior trainers and animal care staff with the daily care and husbandry of marine mammals.
- Participate in the implementation of positive reinforcement training sessions for various behaviors.
- Prepare and deliver enrichment items to promote natural behaviors and mental stimulation.
- Monitor animal behavior and report any changes or concerns to the veterinary and training teams.
- Maintain detailed records of animal observations, training sessions, and feeding logs.
- Clean and maintain animal habitats, ensuring optimal hygiene and safety standards.
- Support public education programs or research initiatives as needed, under supervision.
- Adhere strictly to all safety protocols and animal welfare guidelines.
Required Skills
- Currently enrolled in or recently graduated from a degree program in Marine Biology, Zoology, Animal Science, Biology, or a related field.
- Demonstrated passion for marine conservation and animal welfare.
- Ability to work effectively in a team environment and follow detailed instructions.
- Strong observational skills and attention to detail.
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Physical ability to perform tasks such as lifting up to 50 lbs, standing for extended periods, and working in various weather conditions.
- Proficiency in basic computer applications (e.g., Microsoft Office Suite).
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous volunteer or internship experience in an aquarium, zoo, wildlife rehabilitation center, or similar animal care setting.
- Knowledge of positive reinforcement training techniques.
- First Aid and CPR certification.
- Experience with data collection and record-keeping in an animal care context.
