Job Description

Are you passionate about fossils and eager to contribute to scientific discovery? The Museum at Prairiefire is seeking an enthusiastic and dedicated Paleontology Technician to join our dynamic team. This entry-level position is perfect for individuals looking to get hands-on experience in the exciting field of paleontology. You will assist our paleontologists with various tasks, both in the lab and potentially in the field, contributing directly to the preparation, preservation, and study of fossil specimens. Key Responsibilities

  • Assist with the excavation, collection, and documentation of fossil specimens in the field (when applicable).
  • Perform laboratory preparation of fossils, including cleaning, repairing, and stabilizing specimens using various tools and techniques.
  • Catalog and manage fossil collections, ensuring accurate record-keeping and database entry.
  • Help maintain laboratory equipment and ensure a safe and organized working environment.
  • Support paleontological research projects by assisting with data collection, analysis, and basic report generation.
  • Participate in educational outreach programs, sharing paleontology with museum visitors and students.

Required Skills

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Strong interest in paleontology, geology, or related natural sciences.
  • Excellent attention to detail and manual dexterity.
  • Ability to work meticulously for extended periods.
  • Basic computer proficiency for data entry and record-keeping.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
  • Physical fitness to perform tasks such as lifting up to 30 lbs, standing for long periods, and working in various outdoor conditions (if field work is required).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Geology, Biology, Paleontology, or a related field.
  • Prior experience with fossil preparation techniques.
  • Familiarity with museum collection management software.
  • Experience with basic laboratory tools and equipment.
  • First Aid/CPR certification.
