Job Description
We are seeking a dedicated and enthusiastic Curation Aide to join our team for part-time weekend work. This entry-level position is ideal for individuals passionate about museums, science, and historical preservation. The Curation Aide will support the curatorial staff in the organization, care, and display of our diverse collection of artifacts, exhibits, and educational materials. This role offers a unique opportunity to contribute to the preservation of space exploration history and scientific knowledge within a dynamic museum environment. You will work closely with experienced professionals, learning valuable skills in museum operations and collection management.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist curatorial staff with inventory, cataloging, and labeling of museum artifacts and exhibits.
- Support the preparation and installation of new exhibits and the rotation of existing displays.
- Perform routine cleaning and maintenance of exhibit areas and storage facilities, ensuring optimal conditions for collections.
- Handle museum objects with extreme care, following established preservation guidelines.
- Assist with research related to collection items and exhibit content as needed.
- Help organize and maintain curatorial records and documentation.
- Provide logistical support for special events or educational programs related to exhibits.
- Report any damage or concerns regarding artifacts or exhibits to the supervisory staff promptly.
- Participate in ongoing training and development opportunities to enhance curatorial skills.
Required Skills
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
- Excellent organizational and time management skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Good communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Basic computer proficiency, including familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite.
- A genuine interest in science, history, or museum work.
- Ability to lift up to 25 pounds and perform tasks requiring standing, walking, and light physical activity.
Preferred Qualifications
- Currently enrolled in or recently graduated from a program in Museum Studies, History, Library Science, or a related field.
- Previous volunteer or internship experience in a museum, archive, or cultural institution.
- Familiarity with collection management software or databases.
- Experience with object handling and basic conservation techniques.
