Job Description

We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Florida Fossil Investigator with a specialized focus on Plio-Pleistocene faunal assemblages. The successful candidate will play a critical role in the discovery, excavation, preparation, and analysis of significant fossil remains across various sites in Florida. This position requires extensive fieldwork, meticulous documentation, and the ability to contribute to scientific publications and public outreach initiatives. Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct extensive paleontological fieldwork across diverse Plio-Pleistocene sites in Florida, including site identification, excavation, and recovery of fossil specimens.
  • Meticulously document all field activities, including geological context, stratigraphic data, and specimen provenance, using detailed notes, photographs, and GPS coordinates.
  • Oversee the safe transport of specimens from field sites to the museum's laboratories.
  • Perform initial preparation, conservation, and curation of fossil specimens in the lab, ensuring proper cataloging and storage.
  • Identify and analyze Plio-Pleistocene macrofauna, contributing to research on paleoenvironments, paleoclimate, and faunal evolution.
  • Collaborate with senior researchers and curators on ongoing projects and contribute to peer-reviewed publications and grant proposals.
  • Assist in the development and delivery of educational programs, public tours, and outreach events related to Florida's fossil record.
  • Maintain field equipment and laboratory supplies, ensuring compliance with safety protocols.

Required Skills

  • Proven expertise in vertebrate paleontology, specifically with Plio-Pleistocene faunas.
  • Extensive experience in paleontological fieldwork, excavation techniques, and fossil recovery.
  • Proficiency in geological mapping, stratigraphic analysis, and GPS data collection.
  • Strong observational and analytical skills for fossil identification and interpretation.
  • Ability to perform physically demanding work in various outdoor conditions.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Valid driver's license and ability to travel extensively within Florida.
