Job Description

The Historical Reenactment & Interpretation Intern will play a vital role in bringing history to life for visitors across our sites within the Ironbridge Gorge. This internship offers a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in historical research, costume interpretation, public engagement, and event support, contributing to the rich narrative of the Industrial Revolution. The intern will work closely with our experienced interpretation team, developing skills in communicating complex historical concepts in an accessible and engaging manner to diverse audiences.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist in the research and development of historical characters, narratives, and interpretive programs.
  • Support the creation and maintenance of historical costumes and props.
  • Participate in scheduled reenactments, demonstrations, and interpretive presentations for museum visitors.
  • Engage with the public, answering questions and providing historical context in character or as an interpreter.
  • Aid in the setup and teardown of special events and educational workshops.
  • Contribute to ongoing historical research projects, utilizing primary and secondary sources.
  • Learn and adhere to historical accuracy guidelines in all interpretive activities.
  • Provide general support to the interpretation and visitor experience teams as needed.

Required Skills

  • Strong passion for history, particularly British Industrial Revolution history.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
  • Eagerness to learn and adapt in a dynamic environment.
  • Basic research skills.
  • Comfortable with public interaction.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled in or a recent graduate of a history, museum studies, drama, education, or related field program.
  • Previous experience in customer service, public speaking, or performance.
  • Familiarity with historical periods relevant to the Ironbridge Gorge.
  • Interest in costume design or historical crafts.
