Job Description
We are seeking a dedicated Bridge Painting Sandblaster (Mate) to join our infrastructure maintenance team in West Kelowna. In this vital role, you will work under the supervision of a lead sandblaster to prepare steel surfaces on bridges for painting, ensuring optimal adhesion and longevity of protective coatings. This involves abrasive blasting to remove rust, old paint, and other contaminants, maintaining strict safety protocols and environmental regulations. Key Responsibilities
- Assist lead sandblasters in setting up and operating abrasive blasting equipment.
- Prepare surfaces for blasting by masking, erecting containment, and performing pre-cleaning activities.
- Operate various types of blasting equipment (e.g., pot blasters, vacuum blasters) under supervision.
- Ensure proper abrasive media selection and usage according to project specifications.
- Monitor blast media levels and replenish as needed.
- Adhere to all safety procedures and wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) at all times.
- Perform quality checks on blasted surfaces to ensure compliance with surface preparation standards (e.g., SSPC-SP specifications).
- Clean and maintain blasting equipment and work areas.
- Support the team in daily tasks, including material handling, site organization, and cleanup.
- Report any equipment malfunctions or safety concerns to the supervisor immediately.
Required Skills
- Minimum 1 year of experience in a construction or industrial environment, preferably with exposure to surface preparation.
- Basic understanding of abrasive blasting techniques and safety practices.
- Ability to follow instructions meticulously and work effectively in a team.
- Strong commitment to safety regulations and procedures.
- Physical ability to perform demanding tasks, including lifting heavy equipment, working at heights, and in confined spaces.
- Valid Class 5 Driver's License.
- Excellent communication skills and reliability.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working on bridge or large-scale infrastructure projects.
- Certification in abrasive blasting (e.g., NACE Coating Inspector Level 1, SSPC C-1 or C-2).
- First Aid and WHMIS certification.
- Fall Protection and Confined Space entry training.
