Job Description

We are seeking a dedicated and skilled Biomedical Scientist to join our dynamic laboratory team in Dartmouth. This role is pivotal in supporting our clinical diagnostic services, research initiatives, and public health programs. The successful candidate will be responsible for performing a wide range of laboratory tests, analyzing samples, and contributing to the accurate diagnosis and treatment of diseases. Key Responsibilities

  • Perform complex laboratory tests and analyses on biological samples (blood, tissue, urine, etc.) using various scientific methods and advanced instrumentation.
  • Operate, maintain, and troubleshoot a variety of laboratory equipment, ensuring proper calibration and functionality.
  • Interpret and report laboratory results accurately and efficiently, communicating findings to medical staff as required.
  • Adhere strictly to all laboratory safety protocols, quality control procedures, and regulatory guidelines (e.g., ISO 15189, provincial health standards).
  • Participate in the development and validation of new assays and laboratory techniques.
  • Maintain detailed and accurate records of all tests performed, results, and quality control measures.
  • Contribute to continuous quality improvement initiatives within the laboratory.
  • Collaborate effectively with pathologists, medical technologists, and other healthcare professionals.
  • Provide training and mentorship to junior staff or students, as needed.

Required Skills

  • Bachelor's degree in Biomedical Science, Medical Laboratory Science, or a related field.
  • Proven experience working in a clinical diagnostic laboratory environment.
  • Strong knowledge of laboratory techniques, instrumentation, and quality control procedures.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Proficiency in laboratory information systems (LIS).
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Exceptional attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Eligibility for professional registration with a relevant Canadian regulatory body (e.g., CSMLS certification or provincial equivalent) or the ability to obtain it.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in a relevant scientific discipline.
  • Specialization or certification in specific laboratory areas (e.g., Haematology, Microbiology, Clinical Chemistry).
  • Experience with Lean Six Sigma or other process improvement methodologies in a laboratory setting.
  • Familiarity with Canadian healthcare regulations and standards.
  • Experience in a research-intensive environment.
