Job Description

We are seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented Online Transcriptionist to support academic research projects across various departments at McGill University. This remote, part-time position involves transcribing audio and video recordings from academic interviews, lectures, focus groups, and presentations. The successful candidate will play a crucial role in converting spoken content into accurate written text, facilitating qualitative data analysis and scholarly publication. This role demands exceptional listening skills, a high level of accuracy, strict adherence to confidentiality, and the ability to meet deadlines in a fast-paced academic environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Transcribe audio and video recordings of academic content (interviews, lectures, focus groups, seminars) with exceptional accuracy and speed.
  • Ensure grammatical correctness, proper spelling, and punctuation in all transcribed documents.
  • Adhere strictly to established transcription guidelines and style guides specific to each research project.
  • Maintain absolute confidentiality of all sensitive research data and participant information.
  • Review and proofread completed transcripts to ensure fidelity to the original audio and overall quality.
  • Manage transcription workload effectively to meet assigned deadlines.
  • Communicate proactively with researchers regarding any audio quality issues or transcription challenges.

Required Skills

  • Excellent listening comprehension and auditory discrimination skills.
  • Typing speed of at least 70 WPM with high accuracy.
  • Proficiency in English grammar, spelling, and punctuation.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to identify nuances in spoken language.
  • Familiarity with academic terminology and research contexts.
  • Experience with transcription software (e.g., Express Scribe, oTranscribe) and office productivity tools.
  • Ability to work independently and manage time effectively in a remote setting.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience (1+ year) in academic or research transcription.
  • Familiarity with various research methodologies and qualitative data analysis.
  • Knowledge of French is an asset, given the university's location.
  • Post-secondary education, particularly in a research-heavy discipline.
  • Experience with subject matter in social sciences, humanities, or medical research.
