Job Description

Are you looking to kickstart a career in international trade and government commerce? The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented individual for a Trainee Tariff & Trade Classifier position. This entry-level role offers a unique opportunity to learn the intricacies of Canada’s tariff and trade regulations from experienced professionals. You will undergo comprehensive training to understand the classification of goods, the application of trade agreements, and the enforcement of import/export policies. This is a foundational role designed for individuals with a keen interest in contributing to Canada’s economic security and facilitating legitimate trade.

Key Responsibilities

  • Participate in a structured training program to learn the Harmonized System (HS) and other trade classification methodologies.
  • Assist senior classifiers in accurately determining the tariff classification of imported and exported goods.
  • Learn to apply relevant trade agreements, such as CUSMA, and other international trade policies.
  • Support the assessment of duties, taxes, and other levies on goods.
  • Research and interpret trade legislation, regulations, and departmental policies.
  • Maintain accurate records and documentation related to classification decisions.
  • Collaborate with team members to ensure consistent application of trade rules.
  • Engage in continuous professional development to stay updated on changes in trade law and policy.

Required Skills

  • High school diploma or equivalent (post-secondary education preferred).
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Proficiency in written and spoken English (French an asset).
  • Ability to learn and adapt quickly to new information and complex regulations.
  • Basic computer literacy, including Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
  • Demonstrated interest in international trade, economics, or government affairs.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Post-secondary diploma or degree in Business, Economics, International Relations, Law, or a related field.
  • Basic understanding of international trade principles or customs processes.
  • Experience with data entry or record keeping in a professional environment.
  • Bilingualism (English and French).
