Job Description

We are seeking a dedicated and enthusiastic Child Life Specialist Intern to join our team at Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children. This internship offers an invaluable opportunity to gain hands-on experience in a dynamic pediatric healthcare setting, working under the guidance of certified Child Life Specialists. The intern will support children and families in coping with the challenges of hospitalization, illness, and medical procedures through play, education, and emotional support. This role is ideal for individuals pursuing a career in child life and looking to complete their clinical hours.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist Certified Child Life Specialists in implementing therapeutic play and activities tailored to children's developmental levels.
  • Provide age-appropriate preparation and support for medical procedures, tests, and surgeries.
  • Facilitate opportunities for emotional expression and coping for pediatric patients and their families.
  • Maintain a safe, therapeutic, and engaging environment in playrooms and at the bedside.
  • Document child life interventions and observations in patient records as directed.
  • Collaborate with the interdisciplinary healthcare team to ensure holistic patient care.
  • Participate in supervision, educational sessions, and departmental meetings.
  • Adhere to all hospital policies, procedures, and patient confidentiality guidelines.

Required Skills

  • Currently enrolled in or recently graduated from an accredited Child Life academic program.
  • Demonstrated understanding of child development, family systems, and the impact of illness/hospitalization on children.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to connect with children of all ages and diverse families.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced clinical environment.
  • Proficiency in basic computer applications.
  • Commitment to professionalism, ethical conduct, and patient privacy.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous volunteer or observational experience in a pediatric healthcare setting.
  • Certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) or Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS).
  • Experience with therapeutic play techniques and adaptive activities.
