Job Description

We are seeking a talented and passionate Urban Designer to join our dynamic team in Rotherham. This role offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to a variety of significant urban development projects across South Yorkshire and beyond. As an Urban Designer, you will play a crucial role in shaping the physical form and public realm of communities, translating strategic visions into tangible, high-quality designs. You will work collaboratively with architects, landscape architects, planners, and engineers to create vibrant, sustainable, and well-connected places.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and refine urban design concepts, master plans, and design codes for a range of projects, from large-scale regeneration schemes to public realm improvements.
  • Produce high-quality graphic materials, including site analysis diagrams, illustrative plans, sections, elevations, and 3D visualisations using various software.
  • Conduct site appraisals, context analysis, and policy reviews to inform design proposals.
  • Prepare design and access statements, urban design frameworks, and other planning application documents.
  • Collaborate effectively with multi-disciplinary teams, clients, stakeholders, and local authorities.
  • Contribute to public consultations and workshops, presenting design ideas clearly and persuasively.
  • Ensure design proposals align with sustainability principles, local planning policy, and client objectives.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of urban design best practices, policy, and emerging trends.

Required Skills

  • Bachelor's degree in Urban Design, Architecture, Landscape Architecture, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 2 years of professional experience in an urban design or master planning role.
  • Proficiency in design software, including AutoCAD, SketchUp, Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator).
  • Strong graphic communication and presentation skills, with a portfolio demonstrating design capabilities.
  • Excellent understanding of urban design principles, place-making, and public realm design.
  • Knowledge of UK planning policy and guidance relevant to urban development.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and critical thinking abilities.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Urban Design or a related specialism.
  • Experience working on significant urban regeneration or new community projects.
  • Membership or working towards membership of a relevant professional body (e.g., RTPI, LI, RIBA).
  • Experience with GIS software (e.g., ArcGIS) and rendering tools (e.g., V-Ray, Lumion).
