Job Description
We are seeking a knowledgeable and enthusiastic Plant Care Specialist to join our retail team at Pike Nurseries in Savannah, Georgia. In this role, you will be the primary resource for customers seeking advice on plant health, selection, and maintenance. You will be responsible for the overall well-being of our diverse plant inventory, ensuring they are healthy, well-displayed, and ready for sale. Your expertise will directly contribute to customer satisfaction and the visual appeal of our garden center.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide expert advice to customers on plant selection, care, pest management, and fertilization for various indoor and outdoor plants.
- Monitor the health of all plant inventory, including watering, pruning, fertilizing, and repotting as needed.
- Identify and treat plant diseases, pests, and deficiencies using appropriate and safe methods.
- Ensure plants are properly merchandised, priced, and displayed attractively to maximize sales.
- Receive and inspect new plant shipments, ensuring quality and proper placement.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe working environment within the garden center.
- Assist with inventory management and special orders.
- Educate customers on organic gardening practices and sustainable plant care solutions.
- Collaborate with other team members to achieve sales goals and maintain high store standards.
Required Skills
- Demonstrated knowledge of various plant types (annuals, perennials, shrubs, trees, houseplants) and their care requirements.
- Experience in identifying and treating common plant pests and diseases.
- Strong customer service and interpersonal communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced retail environment.
- Physical ability to lift and move heavy plants and gardening supplies (up to 50 lbs), and stand for extended periods.
- Willingness to work outdoors in various weather conditions.
- Basic computer proficiency for inventory and sales systems.
Preferred Qualifications
- Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Horticulture, Botany, Agronomy, or a related field.
- Previous retail experience in a garden center or nursery setting.
- Certifications in horticulture or pest management.
- Bilingual (English/Spanish) skills are a plus.
