Job Description
Are you passionate about public health and environmental protection? Northumberland County Council is seeking an enthusiastic and dedicated Trainee Environmental Health Inspector to join our dynamic team in Berwick-upon-Tweed. Key Responsibilities
- Assisting qualified Environmental Health Officers (EHOs) with routine inspections and investigations across various premises (food establishments, workplaces, residential properties).
- Learning to interpret and apply environmental health legislation and guidelines.
- Supporting the investigation of public health nuisances, pollution incidents, and food safety complaints.
- Conducting site visits and collecting evidence under supervision.
- Assisting in the preparation of reports, enforcement notices, and legal documentation.
- Engaging with businesses and members of the public to provide advice and promote compliance.
- Participating in training courses and shadowing EHOs to build expertise.
- Maintaining accurate records and databases.
Required Skills
- A degree (or equivalent) in Environmental Health, a relevant science subject, or a related field.
- Genuine interest in public health, environmental protection, and regulatory work.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
- Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
- Good organisational skills and attention to detail.
- Proficiency in standard office software (e.g., Microsoft Office Suite).
- A full UK driving license and access to a vehicle for business use (or ability to travel across the county).
Preferred Qualifications
- Membership or eligibility for student membership with the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health (CIEH).
- Previous experience or voluntary work in a regulatory, public health, or scientific setting.
- Basic understanding of relevant UK environmental health legislation.
