Job Description

Are you passionate about urban forestry, arboriculture, and sustainable city planning? The City of Murrieta is seeking a motivated and enthusiastic Urban Forestry & Arboriculture Intern to join our dynamic City Planning Department. This internship offers a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in the management, preservation, and expansion of Murrieta’s urban forest. You will work alongside experienced professionals, contributing to projects that directly impact the city’s green infrastructure, environmental sustainability, and aesthetic appeal. This is an ideal role for students or recent graduates looking to apply academic knowledge in a practical, public sector setting.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist with tree inventories, assessments, and mapping using GIS tools.
  • Support the development and implementation of urban forestry management plans.
  • Conduct research on best practices in arboriculture, tree health, and disease management.
  • Participate in site visits to assess tree conditions, identify potential hazards, and recommend solutions.
  • Help prepare reports, presentations, and public outreach materials related to urban forestry initiatives.
  • Support departmental efforts in complying with local, state, and federal environmental regulations.
  • Collaborate with various city departments and external stakeholders on green infrastructure projects.
  • Assist with data entry and maintenance of the city's tree database.
  • Learn about permitting processes related to tree removal and planting.
  • Provide general administrative support to the City Planning Department as needed.

Required Skills

  • Currently enrolled in or a recent graduate (within 6 months) from an accredited college or university with a major in Urban Forestry, Arboriculture, Environmental Science, Landscape Architecture, Horticulture, City Planning, or a closely related field.
  • Basic understanding of tree biology, identification, and common tree diseases/pests.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Valid California Class C Driver's License and a satisfactory driving record.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Familiarity with GIS software (e.g., ArcGIS).
  • Prior experience with field data collection.
  • Knowledge of relevant environmental regulations and urban planning principles.
  • ISA Certified Arborist or Arborist Trainee credentials (or working towards them).
  • Experience with public outreach or community engagement.
