Job Description

We are seeking an experienced and visionary Software Engineering Manager to lead one of our critical engineering teams in Chicago. This is a full-time, on-site position based in our dynamic Chicago office, with a comprehensive executive relocation package provided to ensure a smooth transition for the successful candidate. As a leader, you will be responsible for guiding your team in developing robust, scalable, and high-performance software solutions that power Google’s core products. You will combine your technical expertise with strong leadership skills to mentor engineers, define technical strategy, and deliver impactful projects. This role requires a blend of hands-on technical guidance, strategic planning, and people management.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead, mentor, and grow a team of talented software engineers, fostering a culture of technical excellence and collaboration.
  • Define, communicate, and execute the technical roadmap and strategy for your team's products and services.
  • Oversee the full software development lifecycle, from ideation and design to deployment, maintenance, and optimization.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with product managers, UX designers, and other engineering teams to align on goals and deliver integrated solutions.
  • Drive technical discussions, perform code reviews, and ensure the adoption of best practices for coding standards, testing, and system design.
  • Identify and mitigate technical risks, ensuring the scalability, reliability, and security of systems.
  • Manage team performance, conduct regular 1:1s, provide constructive feedback, and support career development.
  • Participate in the hiring process to attract and retain top engineering talent.

Required Skills

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 7+ years of experience in software development, with at least 3 years in a technical leadership or management role.
  • Proven experience managing and leading high-performing software engineering teams.
  • Strong technical background in large-scale distributed systems, backend services, or complex web applications.
  • Proficiency in one or more general-purpose programming languages (e.g., Java, C++, Python, Go).
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and presentation skills.
  • Experience with Agile development methodologies.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's or Ph.D. in Computer Science or a related technical field.
  • Experience working on highly available and fault-tolerant systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to attract, develop, and retain top engineering talent.
  • Familiarity with cloud platforms (e.g., Google Cloud Platform, AWS, Azure).
  • Experience with machine learning systems or data-intensive applications.
