Job Description
We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Radiochemist with a strong focus on nuclear energy to join our team in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. This critical role involves performing comprehensive radiochemical analyses of various samples from our nuclear facilities, ensuring strict compliance with regulatory standards, and contributing to the safe and efficient operation of our power generation assets. The successful candidate will play a vital role in maintaining environmental protection, operational safety, and regulatory adherence within a dynamic and essential industry. This position comes with a high salary and includes company-provided housing (Lojman) or significant relocation assistance.
Key Responsibilities
- Execute complex radiochemical analyses on a variety of samples including water, air, soil, and operational fluids from nuclear facilities.
- Operate, maintain, and calibrate sophisticated laboratory instrumentation such as gamma spectrometers, alpha/beta counters, and liquid scintillation counters.
- Develop, validate, and optimize new analytical methods to enhance laboratory capabilities and efficiency.
- Ensure all analytical activities comply with internal procedures, NRC regulations, EPA standards, and other applicable environmental and safety guidelines.
- Interpret analytical data, prepare detailed technical reports, and provide expert recommendations to plant operations and environmental teams.
- Participate actively in emergency response planning, drills, and actual events as a subject matter expert in radiochemistry.
- Contribute to quality assurance programs, conduct internal audits, and maintain accurate records of all laboratory activities.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including engineers, operators, and health physicists, to support plant performance and compliance initiatives.
Required Skills
- Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, Radiochemistry, Nuclear Engineering, or a closely related scientific field.
- Proven expertise in radiochemical principles, separation techniques, and analytical methodologies.
- Demonstrated proficiency in operating and troubleshooting specialized radiochemistry laboratory equipment.
- Thorough knowledge of nuclear safety regulations, radiation protection principles, and environmental compliance standards relevant to nuclear power generation.
- Exceptional analytical, problem-solving, and data interpretation skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a high-performing team in a fast-paced, highly regulated environment.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills for technical reporting and interdepartmental collaboration.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's or Ph.D. degree in Radiochemistry or Nuclear Chemistry.
- Minimum of 3 years of direct experience working as a Radiochemist in a nuclear power plant, national laboratory, or similar industrial setting.
- Experience with Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS) and statistical software for data analysis.
- Professional certifications in radiation safety, hazardous materials management, or related fields.
- Familiarity with specific regulatory frameworks such as those from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) and state environmental agencies.
