Job Description

Are you eager to start a career where you can make a tangible difference in your community? The City of Council Bluffs Public Works Department is seeking highly motivated individuals for the Public Works Equipment Operator Trainee position. This is an excellent entry-level opportunity for those with little to no prior experience in equipment operation. We provide comprehensive on-the-job training and fully paid certifications, including assistance in obtaining your Commercial Driver’s License (CDL). You will learn to operate a variety of heavy equipment used in street maintenance, utility work, snow removal, and other essential public works functions, all while contributing to the upkeep and development of Council Bluffs’ infrastructure. This role offers a clear path to becoming a skilled Equipment Operator with a stable and rewarding career.

Key Responsibilities

  • Participate actively in all provided training programs and safety orientations.
  • Learn to safely operate and perform basic maintenance checks on various public works equipment, including but not limited to trucks, loaders, excavators, and snowplows under supervision.
  • Assist experienced operators and crew members with manual labor tasks such as flagging traffic, shoveling, raking, and lifting materials.
  • Follow all departmental policies, procedures, and safety regulations.
  • Perform routine tasks related to street maintenance, storm sewer cleaning, park upkeep, and refuse collection as directed.
  • Work collaboratively as part of a team to complete projects efficiently and effectively.
  • Maintain a positive attitude and a willingness to learn and adapt to new challenges.

Required Skills

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Valid Iowa Driver's License and a clean driving record.
  • Ability to obtain an Iowa Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Class B permit within a specified timeframe.
  • Willingness to learn and operate heavy equipment.
  • Ability to perform physically demanding tasks in various weather conditions.
  • Strong commitment to safety protocols and procedures.
  • Excellent work ethic and reliability.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior experience in a manual labor or outdoor work environment.
  • Mechanical aptitude or basic knowledge of vehicle maintenance.
  • Familiarity with local geography of Council Bluffs and surrounding areas.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a team setting.
