Job Description

We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Paleontology Project Lead to join our Environmental Services team. This role is crucial for managing and overseeing paleontological resource assessment, mitigation, and monitoring projects across the Pacific Northwest region. The successful candidate will lead project teams, engage with clients, regulatory agencies, and stakeholders, and ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations. This is an excellent opportunity for a seasoned paleontologist to take on significant leadership and contribute to impactful projects that balance development with scientific preservation.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage paleontological resource projects from initiation to completion, including scope, schedule, budget, and quality control.
  • Conduct and oversee paleontological surveys, impact assessments, data recovery, and monitoring programs.
  • Prepare detailed technical reports, proposals, and presentations for clients and regulatory agencies.
  • Secure necessary permits and approvals from relevant paleontological resource management agencies.
  • Mentor junior staff, foster professional growth, and promote best practices in paleontology.
  • Act as the primary point of contact for clients, regulatory bodies, and internal stakeholders.
  • Develop and implement project safety plans and ensure adherence to all safety protocols.
  • Contribute to business development efforts by identifying new opportunities and preparing competitive proposals.
  • Stay current with relevant paleontological methodologies, technologies, and regulatory changes.

Required Skills

  • Minimum of 5 years of professional experience in paleontological resource management.
  • Demonstrated experience leading paleontological field surveys, data recovery, and mitigation projects.
  • Strong knowledge of federal (e.g., NHPA, NEPA) and state environmental regulations pertaining to paleontology.
  • Proven project management skills, including budgeting, scheduling, and team leadership.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with experience preparing technical reports and presentations.
  • Ability to work effectively in interdisciplinary teams and manage multiple projects concurrently.
  • Proficiency with GIS software for mapping and data analysis.
  • Valid driver's license and ability to travel for field work as required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's or Ph.D. in Paleontology, Geology, Earth Sciences, or a related field.
  • Experience working with diverse fossil assemblages from various geological periods.
  • Familiarity with the paleontology of the Pacific Northwest region.
  • Professional registration or certification (e.g., Registered Professional Geologist).
  • Experience with public outreach and stakeholder engagement regarding paleontological resources.
