Job Description

We are seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Paleontology Field Lead to oversee all paleontological survey, mitigation, and reporting activities for our energy and pipeline projects across Florida. This critical role ensures compliance with federal, state, and local regulations pertaining to paleontological resources. The successful candidate will lead field teams, manage project timelines, and serve as the primary liaison with regulatory agencies and project stakeholders regarding paleontological matters. You will be responsible for conducting fieldwork, analyzing findings, preparing comprehensive reports, and developing mitigation strategies to protect significant fossil discoveries during construction and maintenance operations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage all aspects of paleontological field surveys, resource identification, and mitigation efforts for energy infrastructure projects.
  • Conduct pre-construction paleontological assessments, monitoring, and data recovery operations in accordance with permit conditions and regulatory requirements.
  • Supervise field technicians and junior paleontologists, providing guidance, training, and quality control for all fieldwork.
  • Prepare detailed paleontological reports, including findings, impact assessments, and proposed mitigation measures, for submission to regulatory bodies.
  • Act as the primary point of contact for agencies such as the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP) and the US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) on paleontological issues.
  • Develop and implement Fossil Resource Management Plans (FRMP) and other relevant compliance documents.
  • Ensure all project activities adhere to environmental and safety regulations, company policies, and best paleontological practices.
  • Manage project budgets and schedules related to paleontological services.
  • Utilize GPS, GIS, and other mapping technologies for data collection and analysis.
  • Provide technical support and paleontological expertise to project managers and engineering teams.

Required Skills

  • Minimum of 5 years of professional experience in paleontological fieldwork and project management, preferably within the energy or infrastructure sector.
  • Master's degree in Paleontology, Geology, Archaeology with a specialization in Paleontology, or a closely related field.
  • Demonstrated experience leading field teams and managing complex paleontological projects.
  • Thorough knowledge of federal and Florida state paleontological regulations (e.g., FDEP, FSM, USACE).
  • Proficiency in fossil identification, excavation techniques, and conservation methods.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills for report writing and stakeholder engagement.
  • Ability to work effectively in demanding outdoor environments, often in varying weather conditions and remote locations.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Valid driver's license and ability to travel frequently within Florida.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in Paleontology or a related field.
  • Experience with environmental permitting processes for large-scale linear projects (e.g., pipelines).
  • Familiarity with ArcGIS or other GIS software for spatial data management.
  • Professional certifications related to environmental science or project management.
  • Experience working with diverse geological formations found in the Southeastern United States.
