Job Description

We are seeking an experienced and highly motivated Paleontology Crew Chief to lead field operations and manage projects in the New Port Richey, Florida area. The successful candidate will be responsible for overseeing all aspects of paleontological resource management, including survey, excavation, data collection, and report preparation. This role requires a strong understanding of Florida’s fossil record, excellent leadership skills, and a commitment to safety and scientific integrity. You will work closely with project managers, clients, and regulatory agencies to ensure compliance and successful project delivery.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and supervise field crews in paleontological survey, monitoring, and excavation.
  • Ensure strict adherence to safety protocols and quality control standards on all projects.
  • Conduct thorough paleontological resource assessments and impact evaluations.
  • Identify, excavate, document, and curate fossil specimens in accordance with professional standards.
  • Manage project logistics, including equipment, scheduling, and budget tracking.
  • Prepare detailed field notes, stratigraphic columns, and site maps.
  • Contribute to the preparation of technical reports, including findings, recommendations, and mitigation plans.
  • Mentor and train junior paleontologists and field technicians.
  • Liaise with clients, landowners, and regulatory agencies (e.g., Florida Museum of Natural History) as needed.
  • Operate and maintain specialized field equipment.

Required Skills

  • Minimum of 5 years of professional experience in paleontological fieldwork, with at least 2 years in a leadership or supervisory role.
  • Demonstrated expertise in the identification and recovery of vertebrate and invertebrate fossils, particularly those found in the southeastern United States.
  • Proficiency in GPS/GIS applications for data collection and mapping.
  • Strong understanding of geological principles and stratigraphy relevant to paleontology.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills for report writing and client interaction.
  • Ability to work effectively in challenging field conditions, including varying terrain and weather.
  • Valid driver's license and ability to travel to project sites.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree or Ph.D. in Paleontology, Geology, Archaeology, or a related field.
  • Experience with environmental consulting projects and cultural resource management (CRM) regulations.
  • Knowledge of Florida's specific paleontological permitting and regulatory framework.
  • Proficiency with specialized software for paleontological data management.
  • First Aid/CPR certification.
