Job Description

We are seeking a dynamic and passionate Museum Gift Shop Manager with a unique focus on paleontology to lead our retail operations. This role is perfect for an individual who has a flair for retail management, a keen eye for merchandising, and a genuine interest in natural history, particularly paleontology. You will be responsible for the day-to-day management of the gift shop, including product selection (with a strong emphasis on paleo-themed items), inventory control, staff supervision, visual merchandising, and ensuring an exceptional customer experience. The ideal candidate will combine strong business acumen with a creative vision to make our gift shop a must-visit destination that enhances the overall museum experience.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage all aspects of the museum gift shop operations, including sales, inventory, visual merchandising, and customer service.
  • Curate and procure a diverse range of products, prioritizing items with a paleontological theme that align with museum exhibitions and educational objectives.
  • Oversee inventory management, including purchasing, receiving, stocking, and conducting regular audits to minimize shrinkage and ensure optimal stock levels.
  • Recruit, train, schedule, and supervise gift shop staff, fostering a positive and productive work environment.
  • Develop and implement merchandising strategies to create attractive displays and drive sales, particularly for paleo-focused merchandise.
  • Process sales transactions accurately, handle cash, and manage point-of-sale (POS) systems.
  • Monitor sales performance, analyze trends, and generate reports to inform purchasing decisions and operational improvements.
  • Ensure excellent customer service, addressing inquiries and resolving issues promptly and professionally.
  • Collaborate with museum education and curatorial teams to ensure product offerings complement current exhibitions and themes.
  • Manage the gift shop budget, track expenses, and work towards achieving revenue targets.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and inviting shop environment.

Required Skills

  • Minimum of 3 years of retail management experience, preferably in a museum, educational, or specialty retail environment.
  • Proven experience in inventory management and visual merchandising.
  • Strong leadership and team-building skills.
  • Excellent customer service and communication abilities.
  • Proficiency with POS systems and basic office software (e.g., Microsoft Office Suite).
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, including weekends, holidays, and special museum events.
  • A genuine interest in natural history, science, or paleontology.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Retail Management, Marketing, or a related field.
  • Experience working with museum-specific vendors and suppliers.
  • Demonstrable knowledge or passion for paleontology, geology, or related scientific disciplines.
  • Experience with e-commerce platforms for online retail.
