Job Description

We are seeking an enthusiastic and vigilant Museum Attendant to join our dedicated team at Norwich Castle Museum & Art Gallery. In this essential role, you will be the welcoming face of our institution, ensuring a safe, enjoyable, and informative experience for all visitors while safeguarding our priceless collections. This is a crucial position for anyone passionate about cultural heritage and customer service.

Key Responsibilities

  • Warmly greet and welcome all visitors to the museum, providing initial orientation and assistance.
  • Monitor exhibition spaces to ensure the security of exhibits and the safety of visitors.
  • Provide general information about the museum, current exhibitions, facilities, and local attractions.
  • Respond calmly and effectively to visitor inquiries, complaints, and emergencies, including first aid incidents.
  • Enforce museum policies and guidelines to ensure a respectful and pleasant environment for everyone.
  • Assist with the opening and closing procedures of the museum and specific galleries.
  • Conduct regular patrols to identify and report any maintenance, security, or safety issues.
  • Support educational programs and special events as required.

Required Skills

  • Excellent customer service and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • A vigilant and proactive approach to security and safety.
  • Ability to remain calm and professional in busy or challenging situations.
  • Basic IT literacy for ticketing systems and information access.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
  • Flexibility to work weekends, holidays, and occasional evenings.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience in a museum, gallery, heritage site, or customer-facing role.
  • First Aid qualification.
  • Knowledge of Norwich Castle's history or collections.
  • Fluency in additional languages.
