Job Description

We are seeking dedicated and reliable Hospital Porters to join our essential team within Sheffield Teaching Hospitals. As a Hospital Porter, you will play a crucial role in ensuring the smooth and efficient running of our hospitals by safely and promptly transporting patients, equipment, specimens, and supplies across various departments. This role involves working 12-hour shift rotations, including days, nights, weekends, and public holidays, on a full-time basis. You will be an integral part of our healthcare environment, contributing directly to patient care and operational efficiency. We value a proactive approach, excellent communication skills, and a strong commitment to service excellence. While previous experience is beneficial, a positive attitude and willingness to learn are paramount.

Key Responsibilities

  • Safely and promptly transport patients by wheelchair, trolley, or bed between wards, departments, and clinic areas.
  • Move medical equipment, beds, furniture, specimens, blood products, and supplies efficiently.
  • Handle and transport confidential patient notes and mail.
  • Respond to urgent requests for portering services, including emergency transfers.
  • Maintain a clean and tidy work environment, ensuring equipment is properly stored and sanitized.
  • Adhere to all health and safety regulations, infection control policies, and hospital procedures.
  • Communicate effectively and courteously with patients, visitors, and staff members.
  • Assist with waste management and linen distribution as required.
  • Report any equipment malfunctions or safety hazards promptly.

Required Skills

  • Ability to work 12-hour shifts, including nights, weekends, and public holidays.
  • Good physical fitness and stamina for prolonged periods of walking, pushing, and lifting.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to follow instructions accurately and work effectively in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong commitment to patient care and service quality.
  • Basic literacy and numeracy skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience in a portering, logistics, or healthcare support role.
  • Knowledge of hospital layout and departmental functions.
  • First Aid qualification.
