Job Description
We are seeking a dynamic and passionate High School Jazz Band Instructor to lead our evening rehearsals. This part-time position is ideal for a talented musician and educator dedicated to cultivating musical excellence and fostering a love for jazz among high school students. The successful candidate will be responsible for directing rehearsals, preparing students for performances, and enhancing their understanding of jazz theory and improvisation. This role offers top rates for evening work and the chance to contribute significantly to a vibrant arts community.
Key Responsibilities
- Plan, organize, and conduct engaging evening rehearsals for the high school jazz band.
- Select appropriate repertoire that challenges students and showcases their abilities.
- Instruct students in jazz performance techniques, improvisation, music theory, and history.
- Prepare the band for various performances, including school concerts, community events, and competitions.
- Collaborate with other music educators within the district to foster a cohesive arts program.
- Maintain a positive and inclusive learning environment that encourages student growth and participation.
- Manage instrument inventory and ensure proper care and maintenance.
- Communicate effectively with students, parents, and school administration regarding band activities and student progress.
Required Skills
- Proficiency in a primary jazz instrument (e.g., saxophone, trumpet, trombone, piano, bass, drums, guitar).
- Strong understanding of jazz theory, harmony, and improvisation.
- Demonstrated experience in conducting and leading instrumental ensembles.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to motivate and inspire high school students.
- Knowledge of various jazz styles and their historical context.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Music Education, Jazz Studies, or a related field.
- Previous experience teaching or assisting a high school jazz band.
- Experience with music arranging or composition.
- Active involvement in the local jazz music scene.
- Colorado teaching license or eligibility.
