Job Description
The Virginia Aquarium & Marine Science Center is seeking a passionate and dynamic Educational Paleontology Outreach Specialist to join our vibrant education team. This role is crucial for developing and delivering engaging paleontological programs specifically tailored for K-12 school groups both on-site and through off-site outreach efforts within the Chesapeake region. You will be instrumental in igniting curiosity about Earth’s ancient past, fossils, and evolution, making complex scientific concepts accessible and exciting for young learners. Key Responsibilities
- Design, develop, and implement engaging, age-appropriate paleontological education programs for K-12 school groups.
- Deliver interactive presentations, workshops, and hands-on activities both at the Aquarium and at schools/community centers.
- Manage and maintain a collection of fossil specimens, replicas, and educational materials.
- Collaborate with educators, curators, and researchers to ensure program content is current, accurate, and aligned with educational standards.
- Train and mentor volunteers and junior staff assisting with outreach programs.
- Evaluate program effectiveness and incorporate feedback for continuous improvement.
- Represent the Aquarium at educational conferences, community events, and science fairs.
- Develop and distribute supplementary educational materials for teachers and students.
- Handle program logistics, including scheduling, material preparation, and transportation of outreach equipment.
Required Skills
- Bachelor's degree in Paleontology, Geology, Biology, Education, or a related field.
- Minimum of 1 year of experience in informal science education, museum education, or K-12 teaching.
- Demonstrated knowledge of paleontological concepts, Earth history, and evolutionary biology.
- Excellent public speaking, presentation, and communication skills, particularly with children.
- Ability to develop and deliver engaging, hands-on educational activities.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree in a relevant field.
- Experience working with diverse student populations and learning styles.
- Familiarity with Virginia's Standards of Learning (SOLs) for science.
- Basic knowledge of fossil preparation and identification techniques.
- Current CPR and First Aid certification.
