Job Description

We are seeking a passionate and detail-oriented Editorial Assistant Intern to join our dynamic Book Publishing team. This internship offers an invaluable opportunity to gain hands-on experience in various stages of the publishing process, from manuscript acquisition to final production. You will work closely with experienced editors, learning the intricacies of editorial work, market analysis, and author relations. This role is perfect for an aspiring publishing professional eager to make a tangible contribution to a leading publishing house.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist editors with manuscript evaluations, including reading, assessing, and providing initial feedback.
  • Conduct research on market trends, competitive titles, and potential authors.
  • Support the editorial team in preparing manuscripts for publication, including proofreading, copy-editing checks, and formatting.
  • Manage editorial correspondence, track project deadlines, and maintain organized files.
  • Participate in editorial meetings and contribute to discussions on new projects and strategies.
  • Liaise with authors, agents, and other departments (marketing, production) as required.
  • Perform general administrative tasks to support the smooth operation of the editorial department.

Required Skills

  • Excellent command of the English language, both written and verbal.
  • Exceptional attention to detail and strong organizational skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook).
  • A keen interest in books, literature, and the publishing industry.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Strong time management and ability to prioritize tasks effectively.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled in or recently graduated with a degree in English, Literature, Publishing Studies, Journalism, or a related field.
  • Previous experience (academic or professional) with editing, proofreading, or writing.
  • Familiarity with publishing software or content management systems.
  • Knowledge of current trends in South African literature and publishing.
